Introduction Blog #1

Patrick Mills
Blog Post #1

Hello my name is Patrick Mills and I was born in Brooklyn New York.  I transferred here this spring after getting my associates degree in the fall from my previous college.  I am a currently a Sports Industry major here at OSU.  A lot of my time outside of class is spent playing sports, drawing, cooking, and working out.  I love pushing myself and surrounding myself with people that will help me grow as person.  My future career plans consist of two big dreams I have had for a while which are pretty opposite of each other.  One would might seem a little weird to people but I would hopefully compete in some bodybuilding competitions as a natural competitor.  Although bodybuilding is hard thing to do naturally now I hope to be able to achieve that goal and also work in the business of bodybuilding whether it be training or designing graphics for workout gear.  The other dream I have is to work as an animator/ imagineer for Pixar and The Walt Disney World Company.  Being able to be a part of the story telling and artistry that is related to movies we all know would be incredible.  To think that I could maybe one day create and help develop a movie that would put smiles on family’s faces is to me a great feeling.

When asked the question of what leadership experience made me who I am today a couple definitely come to mind.  One in particular would be in the start of my freshmen year of high school with my friend Logan.  We decided to join the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Departments Youth training program that was offered in our town.  It would serve to be one of biggest leadership experiences of our lives.  We learned and trained just like recruits for the Sheriff’s Department.  From being yelled at by drill instructors, marching in sync, physical training, and many other aspects we were taught to be leaders of ourselves and others throughout this program.  After we graduated our first year we came back for three more and in this time became leaders of our marching and PT groups.  Overall the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department training program has helped me find and become the person I am today.

  1. Patrick, I think its so amazing that your career dreams are practically polar opposite of each other. I too feel that some of my dreams differ greatly from each other but think of how much fun it will be to have multiple careers through my life because of it. I would love to hear more about your experiences with the Sherriff's department training and how you see it shaping you into the person you are today.

  2. Patrick I too took part in the Sheriffs program in my county back home when I was younger. I believe it's beneficial for everyone to take part in something along the lines of this or the military. It's neat to see what they do on a day to day basis and how dangerous it is. The fact that they are there to serve and protect the people even though we all know how little respect they get sometimes is concerning sometimes. It helps mold you into a stronger individual and I'm sure that it has helped make you into the person you are today!

  4. Hi Patrick! I think it is very interesting and cool that you have such a wide range of interests and future career goals. I think its great you're striving for such versatile goals that I also think go hand in hand because they both involve creativity whether it is designing graphics for workout gear or working as an animator/imagineer. I really love Disney too and the joy it brings to everyone no matter what age they are! Have you looked into the Disney College Program? I think you would do awesome in that!

    1. Funny you mention the college program. I actually did it last year for almost 8 months and it was awesome! I just applied again for the fall program and have another interview this Friday. Being there was an amazing experience which helped me grow as an individual and I would recommend it to anyone. Disney fans or not great program!

  5. Hey Patrick. I really enjoyed your blog! I am also a sport industry major and I am also a transfer student. It's really cool to find someone else with a very similar OSU experience. What has been the biggest adjustment for you? For me, it was just the sheer size of the school. I also thought your leadership story was fascinating. It is incredible that you were able to experience that at your Sheriff's department (I didn't even realize programs like that existed). What insight about law enforcement and its role in modern American society did you gain? This is a very contentious issue at this current time, and I feel as if your potential understanding of the inner-workings of law are extremely valuable in that you might now know what it is like to be in their position. I look forward to picking your brain on this topics! Furthermore, have you thought about what you could do to set your bodybuilding business apart?

    1. I would have to say the biggest adjustment for me was not knowing anyone besides my girlfriend who also goes to OSU. I agree that compared to my last college that this one is big one to get around. At the time I did the sheriff program I learned a lot about what all different parts of the departments and what they do which was interesting. Seeing what is going on with law enforcement now on the news is for me sometimes weird to watch because I understand what these men and women do everyday to keep there towns safe. The news does not always tell you what actually happened and it isn't right to make the police the bad guys. But on the other hand I do see that when they are in the wrong they do deserve to face there actions nobody is above the law. If that makes any sense?
Along the lines of setting my bodybuilding business apart I am looking always for new ways that haven't been done yet. In a business world where your physical appearance has to be just as good as what you are selling to people. I am currently in the process of designing a plan to naturally build myself up as bodybuilder to be able to say I did it naturally unlike some of the top dogs in the bodybuilding world today who may use things to enhance there performance illegally. Giving me that edge of all natural is one thing I believe will attract people to me both in business and as a role-model.
